Jonathan Cohen, University photographer, took both the gold and silver awards in the black and white photography category in the CASE District II Accolades Awards program. His photo of the 2011 evacuation from the flood, “Forced to Flee,” took first place, and the photo, “Events Center Home to Many,” captured second place.

Manas Chatterji, professor of management, presented a paper: 鈥淢athematical and Statistical Tools and their Applications to Management Science and Social Sciences;鈥� at an international meeting on mathematics, bioinformatics, information technology and computer science in Calcutta, India, during the winter break.

Sandro Sticca, professor of French and comparative literature, has authored a new book: Lorenzo Filomusi-Guelfi interprete di Dante, published by the Centro Internazionale di Studi e Ricerche 鈥淚l Melograno鈥�, Rome, 2012. The volume examines the critical production on Dante of Filomusi-Guelfi (1856-1923), in particular his exegetical work on the Divine Comedy represented by four volumes: Studii su Dante (1908), Nuovi studii su Dante (1911), Nuovissimi studii su Dante (1912) and Paralipomeni danteschi (1914). After framing in the first chapter the importance of Filomusi-Guelfi鈥檚 Dante studies, Sticca dedicates the second chapter to a critical-historical analysis of 鈥淒ante in English Literature and Art (1380-1882); subsequent chapters deal with Filomusi鈥檚 unpublished essay 鈥淭he Moral Structure of the Paradiso鈥�, celebrations in honor of Dante in the years 1865, 1965, 1983, 1987 and 2011, and a concluding essay on the traditional argument concerning the rivalry between Dante and Petrarch in terms of whether the pre-eminence ought to be assigned to Dante鈥檚 vulgari eloquio or to Petrarch鈥檚 latinitas. The volume is provided with a rich iconographical repertoire of miniatures and paintings on Dante and the Divine Comedy.

Manas Chatterji, professor of management, was the keynote speaker in a meeting on Conflict Management, Peace Economics and Peace Science held at Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith, Varanasi, India 鈥� a University established by Mahatma Gandhi. There were about 300 participants including students. He also served as the keynote speaker at the 44th Annual Meeting of Regional Science Association International (RSAI) - Indian Section. Chatterji established the Indian and the Chinese sections of this premier professional organization and the Northeast U.S. section is located in the School of Management.

Three Binghamton students have been selected to receive Gilman Scholarships to support their study abroad program for the spring 2013 semester. Soe Naing will study in Singapore, Nicholas Rando will study in France and Brittany Sanford will study in Japan. The Gilman Scholarship is a competitive, national program that seeks to provide funding to students, majors and program locations that are less represented in traditional study-abroad statistics or typically wouldn’t be able to afford their time abroad; applicants must be U.S. citizens who receive a Pell grant in their federal financial aid package.
